I chose my topic because I am extremely interested in the sciences and its essentiality in modern society. I think that it is important to be educated about how the past is reflected in the present. I decided to write about the legacy of Norman Borlaug because he is a very influential figure in the course of history that not many people seem to know about. I think my topic is very important, but not many people seem to have a clear idea about who he was or what he did. Although Norman Borlaug has influenced billions of people across the world, his name fails to bring recognition to the table.
To research, I began by looking up key words on my topic, such as “GMOs”, “Norman Borlaug”, “Green Revolution”, etc. This lead to me sites that I used just for an overview on my topic. Then, I began searching through articles on news sites, credible college-made sites, and other trustworthy sources. I used these websites to begin to create my secondary sources section of my bibliography. For my primary sources section, I used a full transcript of the speech that Norman Borlaug spoke when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This was my main primary source, but I also used articles from the New York Times that were written during the Green Revolution. My third section of my primary sources was the photographs that I used that were taken during the time.
I chose to complete a website because it was both convenient and eye-catching. I used many visuals, which helped to tie the writing together. Photographs keep the reader engaged and help to explain some of the things that I find verbosely difficult to explain. I used my essay that I had written before, and broke it up, including key information on certain tabs of the site. I added more to it, added pictures, and added the links to my essay as well as my bibliography. The product was a polished website with multiple navigable tabs, visual elements, and written components.
My project relates to the NHD theme “Leadership and Legacy in History” because it clearly explains the leadership that Norman Borlaug took to spark an entire revolution, as well as the legacy he left behind when he passed away. It is clear that Norman Borlaug was significant figure in the Green Revolution, and he not only kick-started it, but he continued it over years to come. His legacy was left behind so that it can be continued, and before he passed away, he even set things up so they could be continued in his absence. Overall, Norman Borlaug was an extremely influential human being that demonstrated leadership throughout his life, and left a legacy behind him through many outlets.
